The Four Elements (Ether Series) is my second expression of the ancient four elements of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. This series was made with my technique of pinching a warm wax "Tootsie Roll" from head to toe while improvising as I went. However, I did have some expectations for the four figures. In some ancient systems there is a fifth element, Ether: that exists within and between the other four. Ether is unmanifest while the other four are manifest. Through my experience with Turning I saw the opportunity to form the four basic manifest elements out of the unmanifested soft wax and leave the unmanifested waxes as elements of sculpture. It was an elegant solution to some sketches I have been working on for this series for quite some time. I think it worked. I see an opportunity to present these four elements as freestanding pieces but also to develop a very specific base that is a fuller expression of the element of ether. I would love the opportunity to do a large scale public art version of this that would incorporate real water, fire, earth and air in the composition. It could be lots of fun.
