I didn’t know anything about St. David’s Center* before I was invited to be a candidate for a sculpture commission. So, I observed, asked questions, and listened to the answers and the emotion behind the answers. I spent quite a bit of time with a diverse set of St. David's stakeholders and tried to translate what I saw and heard into an artwork that captured the spirit of the Center. I approach every commission like this like I am on a mission to search out and express the essence of the institution. Nothing is more gratifying as an artist than to have a measure of success in that mission.
"Trust" is about capturing the relationships between the students and the adults of SDC.
Julie Sjordal, St. David’s CEO, wrote me saying: “I have been smiling since yesterday morning – when the sculpture was installed. The piece is absolutely beautiful – in every way – and as my children and best friend said when I sent them pictures last night – it absolutely captures the depth of emotion and sense of connection and trust that is represented in our work. I have now told the story to several people about your process of learning about St. David’s Center, observing the work and listening to our stories and reflections and about Tim’s support of that work. And how you took all of that in and then brought back this beautiful piece of art that captured the whole story.”
